Ankyloglossia, or “tongue-tie,” is a condition at birth that can make breastfeeding more difficult for infants who have it. It includes tongue, lip, and cheek ties. This conditions restricts the tongue’s range of motion, which can impact and interfere with eating, speaking, swallowing, and breathing. It also interferes with breastfeeding.
Treatment varies with each case and may include a surgical procedure for correction, as well as an evaluation to ensure ongoing proper tongue and oral function.
