Health care providers serve in many important roles in responding to the opioid epidemic. Recognizing if a patient may be misusing substances, connecting clients to care, and preventing misuse are all common roles that providers may play.

Other substances (such as tianeptine) and substances that mimic opioids (kratom) are increasingly being used, upping the risk of overdose and addiction. The National Institute on Drug Abuse provides more information on substances of concern.
