November is National Diabetes Month, a good time to highlight the importance of understanding your risk of developing diabetes. Florida Department of Health data indicate that 1 of every 6 adults in Marion County has been told at some point that they have diabetes. Meanwhile, the average age for receiving that diagnosis has dropped from 55 to 50 since 2007. Left undiagnosed and untreated, diabetes can be deadly, increasing one’s risk of stroke, high blood pressure and heart disease, among other adverse health conditions. Talk to your doctor about your risk, and if needed, get tested soon.
